| K9 Agility Training (the story so far) |
| K9 agility training North Yorkshire was started in June 2003 by
agility competitors Ron Rawlingson and Kathy Henley who were looking to
do some extra training with their own dogs away from the clubs where
they were members. Word soon got round that someone was training dogs to
do Agility in the Thirsk area and so the club was formed, with the
intention of bringing agility training into an area where there had
previously been no agility training before. Before long they had a venue and a full set of equipment and lots of people wanting to join the club. Ron and Kath also trained clicker, obedience, puppy and Heelwork to Music at the village hall in Copt Hewick near Ripon. This has since been put on hold as agility training takes up all their time these days. K9 trained at South Otterington for a few years until they outgrew the venue they then moved onto the old airfield at Skipton on Swale where they rent a field from a local farmer. The venue is situated about 3 miles from the A1 between Ripon and Thirsk on the A61. In winter an indoor venue is used near Helperby to escape the great British winter weather. K9 prefer to train outdoors as this where all the summer shows are held plus the views across the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside from the training ground are breathtaking. K9 has many dogs competing on the agility circuit throughout the year but there are also many fantastic dogs that don't compete because their handlers just want to have some quality time with their pets each week. They are just as welcome as anyone else K9 don't force anyone to compete, however they train all dogs to Kennel Club rules and regulations just in case their owners change their minds. K9 has many different breeds that come to training lots of Border Collies also Dalmatian, Labradors, Spaniels, Retrievers, Jack Russell's, Poodles, Pyrenean Sheep Dogs, Beardie and lots of crosses. They have a maximum of 8 dogs in a class and handlers are observed and trained for 100% of the lesson. In 2010 the K9 gang had 426 top ten placing's at Kennel club licensed agility shows and at the time of writing are currently in the lead of division 1 in the 2011 UK league tables. Ron and Kath are very proud of the guys from K9 training for making these results possible and making K9 the number one training club in North Yorkshire. You are welcome to come down and watch K9 train at any time just contact them and they will send directions. |
